Silver earrings
with blue stones
gently jingle
in the ears
are they little bells
on the ears
tolling
the time
by the quarter
the earrings waggle
klong
four times every full hour
klong kling right
klong kling left
just can’t go without
bling
translated by Paul-Henri Campbell

Silberohrringe
mit blauen Steinen
klingeln leise
in den Ohren
sind das kleine Glocken
an den Ohren
die die Zeit
anklingen
jede Viertelstunde
wackeln die Ohrringe
klong
zur vollen Stunde viermal
klong kling rechts
klong kling links
geht eben nicht ohne
Klunker

+ About the author / Zum AutorBorn in Selb/Bavaria in 1961, Anja Tuckermann was raised in Berlin-Kreuzberg. In the 1980s, she was member of a feminist organization that was geared towards young women. Anja Tuckermann also edited their magazine Tigermädchen that published pieces written by children and young adults. She later was a contributing editor for a children’s broadcasting service and today also conducts literary seminars for young folks. Given her enormous interest in making sure literary culture is passed on from one generation to younger generations, her work skillfully and entertainingly moves back and forth between literature for young adults and literature for a more mature audience. Anja Tuckermann is also a prolific playwright and operatic librettist. With a clairvoyant eye for the intercultural dynamics of contemporary German demographics, she has put forth novels and non-fiction books that focus on issues, such as immigration and the persecution of adolescents during World War II. Her work has received the Kurt-Magnus-Preis awarded by ARD (the German PBS), the German award for children’s and youth literature (Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis), as well as residencies in places like Stuttgart, Munich, Cracow, and Ankara. Her work has been translated into several languages, including Norwegian, Dutch, French, Turkish, and Chinese.
