+ About the author / Zum Autor
Fouad El-Auwad was born in 1965. As an architect from Damascus, he has lived in Germany for over fifteen years. During this time, he became a bridge between Arabic and German poetry. In Munich, he founded the German-Arabic Poetry Salon, an institution unique in its kind that brings together poets from the Middle East and North Africa with poets from Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and Luxembourg, in order to share and exchange the inspirational power of their respective approaches to the art form. Fouad El-Auwad is the editor and translator of several anthologies that present Arabic and German poetry alongside their corresponding translations. He is the author of ten volumes of poetry written in German. He is part of the growing population of poets that use a literary language that they have acquired as a secondary language – a phenomenon common in early globalizers, such as in the United States, but until recently relatively rare in Germany. In his own work, his use of the mystic imagery of Middle Eastern Christianity as well as the Arabic emphasis on poetry as a supreme art culminates in a confident, vatic tone. Although his books appeared through small publishers, they rapidly went through multiple editions, such as »mit den buchstaben unterwegs« first published in 2003.
