Just leave the world outside
In his palace quite a few seemingly ingenious ideas
meet their ultimate purpose – luckily.
Loyally he stands by his desk’s side,
without drawing attention to himself.
He unburdens me beyond a doubt by assuming
whatever displeases me, makes room in my head.
Occasionally, in silent revolt, I pull it over
my head just like that, leaving the world outside—
Discarded ideas seldom come around again,
but just in case they do, he’d spit ‚em right out:
Already, a crumpled up slip of paper is in my hand,
flattening itself out without my doing; recounting its exile.
Rustling I rub my eyes—
my wastebasket, my superstitions?

Lasse die Welt außen vor
In seinem Schoß findet manch scheinbar geniale Idee
ihre letzte Bestimmung – zum Glück.
Treu steht er dem Schreibtisch zur Seite,
macht um sich kein Aufsehen.
Er entlastet mich fraglos, in dem er annimmt,
was mir missfällt, schafft Platz in meinem Kopf.
Manchmal, aus stillem Protest, stülpe ich ihn
mir einfach über, lasse die Welt außen vor –
Selten kommen verworfene Ideen erneut zu sich,
doch falls, spuckt er sie ohne weiteres wieder aus:
Schon liegt ein zerknüllter Zettel in meiner Hand,
glättet sich von selbst; erzählt von seinem Exil.
Raschelnd reibe ich mir die Augen –
mein Papierkorb, mein Aberglauben?

Jürg Halter was born in Bern, Switzerland, in 1980. He is arguably one of best known spoken word artists in the German language. A graduate from the Academy of Fine Arts in Bern, Jürg Halter published two volumes of poetry in the legendary publishing house Ammann Verlag, »Ich habe die Welt berührt« (2007) and »Nichts, das mich hält« (2010). In 2014, his book of poems »Wir fürchten das Ende der Musik« (We Fear the End of Music) was published by Wallstein Verlag in Göttingen. Jürg Halter collaborated with the Japanese poet Shuntaro Tanikawa (born 1930 in Tokyo) and contributed to every major literary magazine and newspaper in the German language. Jürg Halter’s poetry is a cabinet of strange but common things, events, and emotions that are flung forward by a movement, deportment, and melody that at once makes use of the deflating quality of irony and the hypnotic wake of digressive, mostly amused, but generally mischievous reveries. In 2014, the Edition Patrick Frey, Zurich, published Jürg Halter’s poetry collection »Hoffentlich verliebe ich mich nicht in dich«.

All poems were taken from issue no. 22 of the German poetry magazine DAS GEDICHT, focused on the Poetry of Things.
